Due to the dense vegetation and tall trees here in Parkland, FL, a variety of different spider species thrive in this area. And because of the high spider populations here, Parkland residents often deal with spider problems in and around their homes. Some common spiders that can be found in and around southern Florida include:

Venomous Spiders

Brown Recluse Spiders – Known for the violin or fiddle-shaped marking on their back and their venomous bite, brown recluse spiders typically range in color from light to dark brown, or even a grayish-black color. These spiders usually grow to between 6mm and 20mm, though they can be larger.

Black Widow Spiders – These infamous spiders are shiny black in color and have an identifying red, hourglass marking on their abdomen. Female black widow spiders can grow to about 38mm (1.5 inches) in length, while the males are only half the size of the females or smaller. There are two different species of black widow spiders that can be found in Parkland, FL: the northern black widow and the southern black widow.

Non-Venomous Spiders

Wolf Spiders – Wolf spiders are some of the largest Florida spiders. These spiders range in size from 10mm to 35mm in length. Their bodies are typically brown, gray, or brown in color, patterned, and covered in hair. These non-venomous spiders have eight eyes, arranged in three rows.

False Black Widows – Commonly mistaken for black widow spiders, false black widows are non-venomous spiders that look similar to black widow, but with a few distinct differences that can be used to tell them apart. First of all, false black widows don’t have the distinguishing red, hourglass markings that their cousins do. Second, false black widows are actually brown, not black, helping to distinguish them from their venomous counterparts. Like black widow spiders, female false black widows are larger than the males, the females growing to about 15mm and the males growing to only 10mm.

House Spiders – As their name suggests, common house spiders are known for invading and taking up residence inside homes. These relatively small spiders are typically brown or gray with darker chevron markings on their bodies and legs. The females grow to around 5mm to 8mm and have almost spherical abdomens while males grow to only 4mm and have more elongated abdomens. House spiders have eight eyes in two lateral pairs close together.

Spiny Orb-Weaver Spiders – Due to their coloring and spiny appearance, spiny orb weavers, sometimes referred to as crab spiders due to their crab-like shape, are some of the most easily-recognizable spiders found in Florida. These spiders are quite small with the females measuring at 5mm to 9mm in length and 10mm to 13mm in width and the males ranging from 2mm to 3mm in length and slightly longer in width and are mostly white with distinguishing black markings and red spikes on their backs.
